| University of Miami Ranks Sixth in Overall Financial Performance The University of Miami has ranked sixth among 102 universities, graduate schools, and technological institutions for overall financial performance according to data released by Charity Navigator, a leading national independent charity evaluator. Regarded as the Consumer Reports of the philanthropy world, the five-year-old Charity Navigator aims to assist donors in exploring the large pool of charities in this country. It evaluates the financial strength of 5,000 charities in the United States in order to help determine which charities are most effective and deserve their support. The University of Miami ranked above many of its peer institutions including Duke, Boston University, University of Chicago, and Washington University in St. Louis. Only Emory, Vanderbilt, Rice, Carnegie Mellon, and Case Western Reserve University ranked higher. Charity Navigator has been endorsed by Forbes, winning its “Best of the Web” competition in 2006. It ranked in the Reader’s Digest “America’s 100 Best,” along with GuideStar for “best charity innovation” in 2004, and has been lauded in magazines such as Business Week, SmartMoney, and Esquire. Using a set of financial ratios and performance categories, Charity Navigator evaluates two broad areas of financial health, organizational efficiency and organizational capacity, and then combines these findings to give an overall rating. Based on the financial information provided in IRS form 990, Charity Navigator independently analyzed the University of Miami’s financial performance in seven areas: program expenses, administrative expenses, fundraising expenses, fundraising efficiency, primary revenue growth/program expenses growth, and working capital ratio to give the University an overall rating of 68.94 on a scale of 0-70. “I am so proud of this impressive achievement. This report provides us with a lucid snapshot of the University’s strength and commitment to its students and the community,” said University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala. |

| Cruising for a Cure Campaign In 1997, Irene Panoff, COO of The PPI Group and co-publisher of Porthole Cruise Magazine, lost her 35-year-old sister, Linie Hilderink, to breast cancer. So together with her business partner, Bill Panoff, CEO of The PPI Group and editor-in-chief of Porthole Cruise Magazine, she began an annual charity golf tournament to raise money for cancer research. To date, the golf classic has raised more than $800,000, and the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has been one of the beneficiaries of the events. March 2007 marks the 10th Annual Porthole Cruise Magazine Golf Classic – and the goal is to reach the $1 million mark by the end of the event. In order to reach that target the organizers have launched a Cruising for a Cure campaign in hopes that the goal will be reached by the anniversary date. To participate, purchase a one-year subscription (6 issues) to Porthole Cruise Magazine for $20. By designating UM/Sylvester as your charity of choice, your full purchase price will go directly to breast and lung cancer research at UM/Sylvester. 10th Annual Stiles Corporation-Miami Dolphins Fishing Tournament Presented by Hooters The 10th Annual Stiles Corporation-Miami Dolphins Fishing Tournament was held on June 2-3, 2006, at the Miami Beach Marina. For the third year, the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center was a beneficiary of the tournament. The event was co-chaired and directed by Jeff Peck. Also co-chairing the event were Paul Castronovo, Ray Huizenga and Rob Konrad. Paul Castronovo from BIG 105.9 FM, wrote in the program: “One important thing to remember, this tournament benefits the Miami Dolphins Foundation, which supports numerous charities including UM/Sylvester. You never know what kind of curve ball life is going to throw you. Last September, my wife Gina was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been battling since then and continues to fight today. Through the efforts of the Miami Dolphins Foundation and wonderful charitable people like you, one day there may be a cure for that dreaded disease. I dedicate my efforts this weekend to Gina and if we win again, she is really the winner because she gets me out of the house again.” More than $80,000 already has been donated to cancer research, not including the 2006 event. Last December, W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., F.A.C.S., director of UM/Sylvester, was called onto the field at Dolphin Stadium to accept the check from the Foundation. Jeff Peck, son of Althea Peck, is the co-chair of the Stiles Corporation-Miami Dolphins Foundation Fishing Tournament. The Foundation made their gift in honor of Althea Peck. |
