Sylvester hosts Sixth Annual Landon-AACR Awards in Cancer Research
The Landon-AACR awards are given by the Kirk A. and Dorothy P. Landon Foundation and the American Association for Cancer Research, recognizing significant discoveries that accelerate the fight against cancer.  In 2007, the Kirk A. Landon-AACR Prize for Basic Cancer Research was awarded to Richard D. Kolodner, Ph.D., for his work in the field of DNA mismatch repair.  The winners of the Dorothy P. Landon-AACR Prize for Translational Cancer Research are Douglas R. Lowy, M.D. and John T. Schiller, Ph.D., recognizing their research leading to the development of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine.

Cervical Savior
Inventions change our lives. Now, a University of Miami doctor has come up with his own invention that's saving lives.
Radiation Oncologist Aaron Wolfson, M.D., at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, developed the device called Gynocyte to kill cervical cancer. It's an implant that's easily inserted into the pelvis where it stays for three days and delivers radiation right to the cancer.

The other good thing, according to Wolfson, is that it spares the normal tissue, like the bladder, rectum and bowel.  Gynocyte just won FDA approval, and the doctor hopes his new device will replace the old one that's been around for 40 years. The best part, in clinical trials Gynocyte seemed to do a better job at successfully killing the cancer.  Says Wolfson, "We have over a 90 percent success rate versus a 60 percent with the standard device."

Sylvester physician-Scientist Receives Award for Groundbreaking Lymphoma Research
Izidore S. Lossos, M.D., director of the lymphoma program at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine received the 2007 Celgene Young Investigator Award for Achievements in Clinical Hematology Research during an American Society of Hematology ceremony Saturday, December 8th in Atlanta. This is the sixth year for the prestigious award that is given to a clinician under the age of 45 who has made a significant research contribution in clinical hematology.

Coupons Holiday Program - yet another great holiday!
Big kudos and thanks to Denny Feinsilver, our Coupons for a Cure volunteer leader, who again this past holiday season organized a fantastic Holiday Coupons fundraiser.  With this year’s  two new Holiday Cards the program raised an outstanding $30,000 over the holiday season! We truly thank Denny and all who participated in the program.

Through the years, funds raised by Coupons for a Cure have helped support research programs at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.  By using Coupons for a Cure, everyone has the ability to become a donor at Sylvester; and, by becoming a donor at South Florida’s only research-based cancer center, you become part of the team of physician -scientists that are leading the way towards a cancer cure.

Party in the Park
Eleven “model” patients escorting their physicians graced the runway at the second Party In The Park held on November 29th which supported cancer research at Sylvester. The cocktail event featured Sylvester survivor models strutting designer fashions from the Village of Merrick Park Shoppes as they walked down the runway with their physicians.  Attendees enjoyed this unique fashion show, libations and stylish food in the beautiful tropical setting at the Village of Merrick Park, Coral Gables. Guests enjoyed fabulous tastings donated by South Florida top restaurants, including Cacao Restaurant, Crepe Maker, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Havana Harry’s, Links Restaurant & Lounge at the Diplomat, Ortanique on the Mile, The Palm Coral Gables, and Trattoria Sole. Participating merchants outfitting the model patients include Ann Taylor, Anthropologie, CH Carolina Herrera, Cache, Tiffany & Co., Tommy Bahama, and UCB Benetton.  Special thanks to Rick Morgan, Chair of the event and to Mark Trowbridge, CEO of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, for serving as emcee that evening!

Founders Holiday Party at Fairchild Tropical Park
Truly a night of celebrations!  Board of Governors Chair, Joan Scheiner and her husband J. David Scheiner, hosted members of the Board of Governors and Founders for Sylvester for a memorable evening celebrating the holiday season and Sylvester’s 15th anniversary.  Joan wowed everyone with her humor and heartfelt words, and she also surprised her husband David with a huge birthday cake.  University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Director, W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., F.A.C.S., presented a proclamation from the Dean in honor of Mr. Scheiner’s birthday.  Goodwin also shared the vision for the future of the cancer center and thanked everyone for their continuing support, dedication and generosity. In honor of Sylvester’s anniversary and Harcourt Sylvester’s vision, Goodwin lead a champagne toast to Sylvester.   Everyone agreed it was an evening to be remembered.
