Sheila and David Fuente Graduate Program in Cancer Biology
The Sheila and David Fuente Graduate Program in Cancer Biology provides students with a unique multidisciplinary training environment to prepare them for independent research and teaching careers. The associate director of education and training, Sean Scully, M.D., Ph.D., serves as co-director of the clinical mentoring segment of the program, and, as such, is in a unique position to increase interactions between the basic science and clinical members of UM/Sylvester.
Dr. Scully solicits research interests from both research and clinical faculty and “matches” them for scientific collaboration. Basic scientists interested in engaging clinical problems, including obtaining access to clinical materials, often have difficulty in finding an interested clinical oncologist with whom to interface. Similarly, clinicians who want to explore specific biological questions but have limited expertise in a given research area are introduced through the Postdoctoral Programs Office.
