Why should I seek treatment at The Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute?
The Institute features a multidisciplinary team offering patients the opportunity to be seen by several specialists in one location. Patients can be assured that continuity of care will be provided throughout their treatments.
I've been diagnosed with cancer. Where should I go for a second opinion?
Second opinions are rendered by surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists at the Institute. To make an appointment with one of our specialists for a second opinion, please contact the Information Center at 305-243-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-545-2292.
Where can I go for screening, diagnosis, and a second opinion for breast cancer?
UM/Sylvester has a state-of-the-art radiology department and provides a full range of screening and diagnostic mammograms. Once a patient receives a breast cancer diagnosis, she/he can seek a second opinion with one of our specialists. I have so many questions about cancer and my diagnosis. How can I get more information to make wise decisions regarding my treatment?

Physician Information/Physician Referral
How do I schedule an appointment with a physician?
Although appointments can be made with many of our breast cancer specialists by calling the Physician Referral Office (PRO) at 305-243-5757 or 800-432-0191, some of our physicians prefer to handle appointment scheduling in their own offices. By calling our Information Center, you will be connected with either the PRO or the doctor’s office, whichever is appropriate. The UM/Sylvester Information Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be reached by calling 305-243-1000 or 1-800-545-2292. Appointments can generally be made from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
You also can request an appointment online with one of our cancer specialists by filling out our secure online appointment form. Please note that the form is titled, “University of Miami Medical Group Appointment Form,” which is used for all University of Miami doctors, including those practicing at The Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute. Once you have completed the form, just click and submit. It’s that easy. You will receive a response by telephone within one business day.
Do I need a physician referral?
Patients can call for an appointment without a physician’s referral. Once an appointment is made, the patient is responsible for obtaining an insurance referral, if required by your insurance company.
Research at The Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute
What research is being conducted at the Institute, finding newer and better treatments, as well as ways of preventing cancer?
We currently have many clinical trials underway with the goal of finding newer and better treatments for breast cancer as well as preventing the disease. If I were interested in participating in research being conducted at the Institute could I have my doctor call?
Yes, we work with doctors in the community to provide patients the latest medications and clinical trials available. Physicians can contact the Information Center at 305-243-1000 or 1-800-545-2292 to be directed to the appropriate office.
Classes/Education
Do you offer educational programs at the Cancer Center?
Yes, UM/Sylvester offers a variety of education and outreach activities at both its Miami and Deerfield Beach locations. For breast cancer patients undergoing surgery, a class is available regarding incision and drain care. Offered monthly is a chemotherapy education session for patients and their families. Do you offer support groups?
The Courtelis Center for Psychosocial Oncology at UM/Sylvester offers a number of support groups and conferences that can assist individuals with the emotional stress of cancer. To find out more about the various options available, call the Information Center at 305-243-1000 or 1-800-545-2292.
