Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways to contribute to the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute. You may wish to further the cure for breast cancer by making a financial contribution to fund a research laboratory or training fellowship or donate your time as a volunteer. Below are some of the specific philanthropic opportunities available now.

Philanthropy & Grant Funding

Training Scholarships

Clinical Research Fellowship
The Breast Cancer Fellowship initially will comprise a one-year clinical sub-specialty training in breast cancer, including rotations at UM/Sylvester with an oncologist of choice in the areas of surgical, diagnostic, radiation, and medical oncology, as well as participation in breast tumor boards and the Jackson Memorial Hospital clinic. A one-month breast pathology rotation and a research component of at least six months also will be available.

In addition, mentorship will be offered and supervisors identified for research projects in translational, basic or social sciences including genetics or epidemiology related to breast cancer. Clinical fellows who wish to carry out lab-based projects will be encouraged to stay for a two-year training period. All trainees will receive dual mentorship by one of our clinical breast faculty and by a basic researcher (molecular or social scientist). Funding for these fellowships will be sought through T32 grants, pharmaceutical companies, and philanthropy.

Post-doctoral Training in Translational Breast Cancer Research (T32)
The three-year translational breast cancer research training program will offer post-doctoral Ph.D. and M.D. fellows a focused program in molecular biology of breast cancer. The program initially will offer three and ultimately six postdoctoral trainees intensive, multi-level, and balanced training in translational breast cancer research. Three post-doctoral trainees will be recruited in the first year, while three additional post-doctoral fellows are recruited in the second year.

“Mark for Life” T-Shirts
On a community outreach level, a partnership with Mark for Life has been established to raise awareness of the need for breast self-examinations in the battle against breast cancer. Mark for Life has created a breast self-examination t-shirt to help make it easier for women to take a more proactive role in the fight against this disease. Up to ten percent of all nationwide sales of the t-shirt will benefit the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute.
