Description of Program
This new research program was developed from the Biobehavioral Oncology and Cancer Epidemiology Program, which was divided into two separate programs as new recruits provided added expertise in the cancer epidemiology area, warranting the creation of a separate program.
Researchers in Sylvester’s Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Program are charged with understanding and addressing the social, environmental, and biological reasons for cancer disparities. These researchers are working to clarify molecular and genetic mechanisms of cancer risk and progression, with the aim of developing predictive models in treatment response and personalized medicine. Extensive interaction with community organizations and clinics, including many which work mainly with minority and underserved populations, strengthens this research program. They will turn to the community for participatory research, as well as national and state databases, to develop models that can be applied on a broad scale to improve cancer prevention, early detection, and clinical outcomes.
Goals of Program
The overall goal of the Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Program aims to overcome health disparities. Specific research goals of the program aim to:
- Understand and address the social, environmental, and biological determinants of cancer disparities
- Elucidate the molecular/genetic mechanisms of cancer risk and progression
- Develop predictive models in treatment response and personalized medicine
- Improve cancer prevention, early detection, and clinical outcomes
To achieve these goals, program investigators address the following research themes and research areas:
Themes:
- Cancer Etiology and Early Detection
- Prognosis and Clinical Outcomes
Research Areas:
- Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology
- Community-Based Participatory Research
- Survey Research: National and State-Databases
- Pre-Clinical Models and Clinical Research
- Decision Making Process: Screening and Treatment
- Predictive Models: Risk, Treatment Response, and Survival
