Cancer Modeling Shared Resource

The goal of the Cancer Modeling Shared Resource (CMSR) is to provide state-of-the-art small animal cancer modeling services to foster cancer research and to accelerate the discovery of tailored anti-tumor therapies, including preclinical data for drug development, proof of principle for novel therapies, preclinical imaging, and disease biomarker studies. The CMSR offers an integrated array of services for developing experimental mouse models of cancer, devising and implementing treatment protocols in a pre-clinical setting, and evaluating responses to treatment using noninvasive small animal imaging and histopathological analysis.

Examples of services provided include:

  • Modeling Services: develop new experimental mouse models, like orthotopic cell line and patient-derived xenografts, genetic models and colony management, humanized models, complex surgeries, ultrasound-guided injections.

  • Treatment-related Services: drug toxicity and efficacy studies, drug formulation and delivery, and related assessments, like cell blood count, clinical chemistry; radiotherapy for total body irradiation (RS225, Xstrahl) or image-guided irradiator (SARRP, Xstrahl).

  • Noninvasive small animal imaging Services: in vivo bioluminescence and fluorescence optical imaging (IVIS, Perkin Elmer), high-frequency ultrasound imaging (Vevo 3100, Fujiifilm), structural and functional nuclear imaging (VECTor 6, MILabs), and magnetic resonance imaging (Biospin 94/20, Bruker).

  • Research histopathological Services, like H&E and automated immunohistochemistry (IHC), tissue processing and embedding, (cryo)sectioning, staining, scanning and image analysis, data storage of digital slide images and pathology review, tissue preparation for specialized multi-omic analyses.
